SPRING GATHERING 20TH MAY 2012

David Foxley has sent this in so I hope as many as possible turn up. It is of course for any member from anywhere in the country all welcome:

I have made a booking for the Spring 2012 Southern Get Together. It will be at Milestones Museum in Basingstoke
on May 20th.

We have met there before, so some people should remember it, but the last time was Spring 2006. The museum opens at 11:00, so I suggest a mid-day start; so that we can get things set up before the multitudes come flooding in. As for previous events, all VEC members will get free admission to the museum and Colin has promised all members a free drink and cake on arrival.
Access to the museum is good. It is close to either junction 6 or 7 of the M3. The museum is dedicated to the history of life in Hampshire, which includes two significant heavy vehicle manufacturers. Thorneycroft who used to make Lorries and buses just across the road from the museum and Taskers who made steam engines in Andover. There is a good display of vehicles from both companies, so plenty for petrol heads, diesel heads and steam-buffs. Follow the link for more information:
http://www3.hants.gov.uk/milestones

Please can anyone planning to come to drop me a message at davidfoxley@yahoo.co.uk
This will give me an idea of how many parking spaces we need to allocate.

Shows/ Gatherings 2012
It’s been suggested that a number of Gatherings are organised at various Car shows to enable people to meet up. If you know of any places any where let us know and we will send out the details in each newsletter.
Tatton Park in Cheshire has been suggested as a venue How many are interested?? Please let us know as it needs to be booked but we need approximate numbers to what size area we need this will go for any other places put forward I will try and put a list of suggestions in each newsletter so people can see where and when and let us know if they are interested.

Trafford Centre Manchester March 24/25th an indoor Show for Clubs if anyone interested in this please contact and let us know as its no use booking if no one going to turn up.

MOT Problems
This is from David Foxley and something for a lot of us to be aware of:

You remember the problem I mentioned previously about the MOT for my car. Well, there is an issue here that might catch more of us out. What happened is this:

1.         When I got my car home from the test, I found that the new MOT had been dated to 12th December 2012, whereas it should have read January 9th 2013.

2.         I contacted the garage to find out why they had not dated the new MOT to start when the existing one expired. They said that the MOT computer system did not recognise my car, as the chassis number was only 5 digits (as will all 1800s be) and not      6. They therefore had to issue the certificate as if the car was being tested for the first time! This was a big surprise as there has never been a problem before, and the computerised MOT system must have been in operation for at least 5 years.

3.         I went back to the garage and they issued me a new certificate with the correct expiry date in January 2013. They told me that they had to go into the system manually as the MOT computer would not recognise my car.

4.         Today I received a letter from DVLA regarding "inconsistencies" in the registration details of my car, asking me to fill out a questionnaire with the chassis numbers as listed on the MOT certificate and the V5C, and also as stamped on the car body. They said that until this was done, the MOT test details regarding my car would not be shown on their computer system. They said that if the inconsistencies could not be sorted out, then I would have problems registering the car (and presumably    insuring it).

You can imagine my surprise, as I have owned the car for nearly 14 years, and have never had a problem before. The V5C has always shown a 5 digit chassis number, even the new one that was issued a few months ago. I can only presume that this number has been in the system since the car was first registered in 1967. Nowadays all cars have a 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which presumably incorporates the manufacturer's chassis number. When 1800s and Amazons were first registered, everything was still done manually through the local licensing authorities. All manufacturers must have issued their own chassis numbers and used their own numbering systems for this. I can only presume that in the last 12 months, the MOT system data base has been set to need the last 6 digits of the "chassis number". I will find out if the problem has been resolved when I go to reinsure the car towards the end of January.

I shall keep you up to date on this, and would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem.

Regards
David

Proposed Closure of DVLA Local Offices

The Department of Transport announced plans to close all 39 local offices by the end of 2013 centralize the services offered at DVLA, Swansea with communication mainly online methods.
Minister Mike Penning said: Centralizing the DVLA services is the first crucial step towards making more of its transactions available online allowing people to deal with the DVLA at their chosen time and place. This will mean quicker turnarounds to meet customer’s needs??
In reply Labour Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle said: Ministers must now explain why they believe that closing down the entire network of DVLA offices and centralizing services will make it easier. And can they demonstrate what steps they are taking to ensure continued access to services for those who don't have internet facilities or need face to face assistance..,
The consultation on this subject is open until 12th March 2012 Correspondence to:
Corporate Affairs Directorate
D16 DVLA
Swansea
SA6 7JL

Just a comment on this as some of you know I am Deaf and use a special Typetalk telephone I had reason to phone the DVLA at Swansea last week using Typetalk and I tried for over 40 minutes when they answered it came up as symbols etc when I looked up what was wrong it said the other end (Swansea)had turned their special code off and it would not work - Gillian

Public Consultation on Historic Vehicles MOT Exemption/FBHVC MOT Survey
The possibility of exempting certain groups of vehicles from the requirement to have an annual MoT test has been under discussion since the end of 2010.
The Department for Transport issued a public consultation paper in November which included a proposal to exempt pre-1960 vehicles (historic vehicles) from testing. The full text of the consultation, together with a pro-forma for responding, can be found at www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/dft-2011-27. The document sets out 4 options:

No change

Option 0

Option 1

Exempt all pre-1960 manufactured vehicles from the statutory MOT test
(the DfT's preferred option)

Option 2

Exempt all pre-1945 manufactured vehicles from the statutory MOT test. Continue testing vehicles manufactured between 1945 and 1959

Option 3

Exempt all pre-1920 manufactured vehicles from the statutory MOT test. Continue testing vehicles manufactured between 1920 and 1959

The closing date for responses is 26 January 2012. In completing the pro-forma respondents are required to explain the reasons for their preferences.

The FBHVC wants to seek the views of its members before responding to this consultation. As time is limited the only practical way to obtain this information in time is by means of an on-line survey that addresses the key questions raised by the consultation.

The survey that has been set up for FBHVC by the Historic Vehicle Research Institute outlines the DFT proposals and should take no more than five minutes to complete. It may be submitted anonymously and can be found here. The survey is open until 10 January 2012.
This is an important consultation for all owners of historic vehicles so please take time from your Christmas festivities and complete the FBHVC survey and also, if you so wish respond direct to the DfT.

Government slashes motoring red tape
Drivers are to be released from excesses of red tape currently required by government, Transport Secretary Justine Greening has announced.
As a result of the ‘Road Transport Red Tape Challenge’ the government-wide process to get rid of unnecessary, burdensome and overcomplicated regulations, the Department for Transport is:

  • Scrapping the regulation requiring motorists to hold a paper counterpart to their driving licence by 2015.
  • Improving the regulation surrounding the notification process for vehicles that are not in use on the road (Statutory Off Road Notification or SORN). Once drivers have notified the DVLA that their vehicle is SORN, they will no longer have the burden of annual SORN renewal.
  • Only issuing hard-copies of V5C vehicle registration certificates for fleet     operators when needed, with the potential to be rolled out to private motorists.
  • Removing the need for an insurance certificate. The Department for Transport will work with the insurance industry on removing the need for motorists to have to hold an insurance certificate.
  • Abolishing the requirement for drivers to prove they have insurance when applying for road tax meaning 600,000 more people will be able to tax their car online. This has been made possible by new checks of existing databases for insurance under new Continuous Insurance Enforcement rules. The DVLA’s records are compared regularly with the Motor Insurance Database (MID) to identify registered keepers of vehicles that appear to have no insurance.
  • Abolishing the regulations regarding the treatment of lost property on buses. Bus companies currently have to wait 48 hours before they can throw away perishable items left on the bus.

The 2011 Classic Motor Show
Celebrating 50th Birthday of the Volvo P1800

Our Stand at this year’s Classic Motor Show held each November at the NEC Birmingham was a very special event for all Volvo 1800 owners. Our Club stand celebrated by having a vehicle from each of the 1800 models from the first – a P1800 to the last an 1800ES.
1800’s on display included Kevin Price, our Club Founder’s Original Roger Moore, TV Saint Car which is undergoing a full restoration. The car has been shown previously on our club stands but has be stored for a number of years following major problems with the paint work and Kevin’s poor health. He hopes that next year the car will be on the road to celebrate its 50th birthday and 50 years of The Saint. Tony & Gillian Whitton brought along their recently finished 1800S Convertible and their lovely 1800ES. The 1800E n display was provided by Colin & Pauline Atkinson and a 480GT owned by Penny Connorton showed how the 1800 influenced future Volvo Production. The 1800’s were accompanied by Kevin’s very rare PV445 Convertible, John Kemp’s lovely 131 Amazon and Colin Hughes brought along his recent purchase a 760 Low Rider, complete with hydraulic Suspension, Sound system etc – a rear crowd puller when car danced to the music! The final Volvo on display was an
Itera ‘Volvo’ Plastic bike, again owned by Colin, which caused a lot of interest from visitors who could not believe Volvo had made a bike.

Also at the show were Volvo Heritage and the Volvo Owners Club with a selection of 1800’s including one of the Frua prototypes and an Aston Martin engine 1800S. There was also the plaster Frua models on display. Guest at the show was Pelle Petterson – Designer of the P1800 who visited our stand and kindly ‘signed’ the boots of each of his 1800 Coupe creations on our stand. Kevin’s Monster Miler 1962 P1800 was also at the show representing the Club on CJ Auto’s Stand who supply a variety of Chassis Tilters, Ramps and other equipment for the Classic Restorer.
Each year the show gets bigger and better and this show without exception was one of the best. This is only part of the report as its too long I have had to leave most of it on the website: www.volvoenthusiastsclub.co.uk
Along with a lot of pictures well worth a look.

VOLVO P1800E ON GOING RESTORATION

Hi Gillian

Thanks for your letter and information on the proposed changes to the MOT,  I am sure it will make little difference to the 1800's
last thing we need is more expense in the present climate.

I have recently re-joined the VEC Club after an 18/19 years absence, some kind person kept good records as I have been re-issued
my original membership number.  The car I own is a Gold P1800E and at the moment it is under a full restoration like you and Geoff
I am doing the work myself.

POTTED HISTORY
The last time the car was taxed and used daily was 1993,  in 1990 I received Best Car at Keswick ( Northern Day Out) and the following
year same show Runner Up, but had  more success at the Volvo Caravan & Camping Section gaining a 1st position.

During 1992 I had to rebuild the engine and managed to do 4,000 to 5,000 miles before a shock absorber broke through the front cross
member at which point I decided to lay the car up for what I thought would be a short time.

By next February I hope to have the car ready for a complete respray and then re-assembled by summer fingers crossed.

Not sure if any of the above information is of use to you, attached are some photographs of my progress.

VEC NEWS November 2011

As you probably know the VEC club that was founded and run by Kevin Price was re-launched in January 2010 as VEC 2010 with Colin Hughes and his son Robert taking care of the day to day running. But keeping contact with everyone is time consuming and as they are both in full time employment it has become almost impossible.
A Newsletter needs NEWS so please anything you think will interest others, stories about your cars, pictures, and reports on shows you have attended. Please tell us what you would like to see, it’s your club and your newsletter so please tell us. I am hoping to have a regular For Sale/Wanted page.  If you have an article you’d like included please send it through.

I have no experience of this sort of thing so please bear with me but from January 2012 I hope to do a Bi-Monthly newsletter via email or in the case of no internet access by post keeping you informed on what is going on in the club.
My name is Gillian Naylor and along with my husband Geoff we may have met some of you when we have attended meets with our white P1800 which we restored ourselves.

I hope to send out the next newsletter in mid January by email to as many as possible to help keep costs low so please could you send me your email address by adding Confirm in the subject line and your name in the main email and I will then add your name to the contact list. Can you let me know if you need yours sending by post if so just contact me at the address below.

Shows/Meets for 2012 do you know of any good shows where we can have a club stand and meet up? I am based in West Yorkshire so could someone from other area’s help with this.

What are your views on the new MOT regulations coming in January? Geoff doesn’t think it will effect the P1800’s too much but will probably affect the 120, 200, 700, 900 series. Let me know your views and I will try to put some comments in the next newsletter. I have included a copy of the new MOT standard on the next page it was It was in the November 2nd issue of Classic Car Buyer who have kindly given permission to copy this for you.

VEC NEWS October 2011

This is just a brief update of events and matters arising throughout the year.

Most of this has already been posted onto our web site, The web site has had a major overhaul thanks to the efforts of Trevor in Manchester (that’s not his surname), and although we have changed the “front end” the older material is still there, but now achieved.

Bristol was a great success again this year and one of our exhibits (a P1800 that had been restored over the last 10 years) received one of the coverted “Red Rosettes”,

Our stand reflected a day at the seaside, complete with sandpit and a Punch & Judy show. We only had space to exhibit 2 cars on the stand, the P1800 mentioned above and Colin & May Tatlow’s PV.

My son Robert managed to buy a 240 saloon at the onsite auctions, so it was fortunate that we only used one car to travel down in. Our current fleet stands at 13, despite losing 2 as write-offs following traffic accidents.

In that respect you may like to know that Kevin recently (21st October) has a serious accident which resulted in his 850 T5 being written off. Thankfully both he and his passenger escaped injury, but as the police officer attending the incident said “Thankfully you were in a Volvo, or I dread to think what would have happened”

In the rush to clear up after the Bristol event, I managed to bring home 2 bags of rubbish, which meant that I had therefore thrown away our kettle, tea cups and supplies in error!!!!

We had a number of membership enquiries from the event which have been followed up.

We have managed to secure a number of new members, but as is the way of all clubs, we also had a few that choose not to renew their membership this year. Membership is slightly below its 2010 level.

We did not have a “National” event this year. As you will recall the aim was to have a Southern national this year and a Northern national in 2012. We did find a number of locations where we could have operated from, but sadly could not find enough members who wanted to attend.

We still plan to have the 2012 event, so please let me know if you will support one!!!

Coming up we have the Bristol Restoration Show, 5th and 6th November 2011. Once again Kevin will be running this event with assistance from Colin and May Tatlow. Please go along and give them your support if you are free that weekend.

Classic Car Show, NEC Birmingham Friday 11th – Sunday 13th November 2011. Set up from Thursday 10th. This years’ theme is “family” and with it being the 50th year of the launch of the P1800 in the UK our stand will be centred around a family group of 5 or 6 P1800s, at least one Amazon and a Volvo Lowrider.

VEC NEWS Issue 2 August 2010

Here we are again with Issue No. 2, who said it wouldn’t last?
So what’s new? Well we did go to the Bristol Classic Car Show and our stand had the “Yellow Brick Road” from The Wizard of Oz as its theme, complete with the Lion, the Tin man (galvanized of course to Volvo standards) a yellow carpet  and a yellow taxi, to name just a few. Photos are on the website.
A last minute change saw us reversing our display to accommodate the wishes of some traders but by 10.00 am on the Saturday morning we were ready for action.
Kevin’s convertible PV445 took centre stage and received lots of attention and many photographs were taken by professionals and the public The car itself was highly praised by members of other clubs on display, notably the Alvis Owners Club.
Kevin was the only one brave enough to dress up, and wore his Lion outfit with “pride”.
We had a number of membership enquiries which have been followed up.
The stand breakdown and pack up was a lot quicker than the set up and we all managed to get away by 6 pm and had dry and uneventful journeys home.

In general we have managed to secure a good number of new members, but as is the way of all clubs, we also had a few that choose not to renew their membership this year. Overall membership has remained at its 2009 level.
Thanks to Colin & Pauline Atkinson we got some excellent coverage in the July edition of Practical Classics when they and their P1800 went to Beaulieu in April to provide photos to go with the “Buyers Guide to the P1800”. It was a beautiful sunny day, and all the photos were taken inside!!!

On the publicity side, we had had a number of enquiries from the BBC and other production companies about up and coming new programmes which may require Volvos, so watch this space for more details, who knows it could be your car on the telly.

This edition of VEC News is the last one that I plan be sent by post. Most of us have access to the Web and future editions will be the on the Club Web site and sent to you by some wonderful system yet to be designed. It is therefore very important that we have your details clear and correct when you submit your membership details and that you advise us of any changes.
Can those of you who cannot access the Web please let me know via my home address and I will post future editions to you.
The main reason for this change is to reduce our expenditure. Postal charges alone to send this edition will be over £50.00, and at present the cost of envelopes, paper, printing and time are all free, which is something we need to discuss at The National.
Dates for your diaries are as follows:-
National Gathering and General Meeting of “VEC 2010”, Sunday 5th September 2010 at The  Old Dairy Farm Country Shopping & Craft Centre, Upper Stowe, near Weedon, Northants NN7 4SH. 01302 340525. Arrive from 11.00 am

This venue is close to Jct 16 of the M1, and just off the A5.

Refreshments on arrival in “The Barn Restaurant” will be funded by the Club, any other food and drinks will need to be paid for by yourselves. We have a separate room allocated for our purposes .Further details of the venue can be found on Google, or by phone

Northern Group Meet Sunday 3rd October 2010 (all welcome, but must book in advance), James Bond Museum, Keswick

Bristol Restoration Show, 6th and 7th November 2010. Kevin will be running this event, so let me know if you can help.

Classic Car Show, NEC Birmingham Friday 12th – Sunday 14th November 2010. Set up from Wednesday 10th, so again let me know if you are available to assist during any of this period. We do not currently have a “theme” for this event, so your views and ideas are welcomed, but we would like to see at least one Amazon on the stand this year. If your car goes on display, you will get free entry to the show for one of the days.

That’s all for now.

News from the Motoring Press:
Insurance Cover-all Threat:
Reported in the 14th August 2008 issue of Classic Car Weekly Classic Car owners are again under threat and this time it is headed by the Motor Insurer’s Bureau who are in discussion with the government to change the legal basis under which motor insurance is required in the UK. This could effect many of you out there and cost a packet!!!!

As responsible classic enthusiasts we all accept that adequate insurance cover is required if our vehicles are used on the road- and that of course, includes any vehicle we own parked on a public road, even if it does not turn a wheel.

However the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (whose sub-division the Motor Insurer’s Information Centre is responsible for among other things, Motor Insurance Database) is in discussions with the Government to make law that ANY car registered to you must be insured irrespective of use – a situation that means that insurance-dodgers need no longer be caught just on the road, but tracked down simply by consulting central computer records. If the car shows up as uninsured, then an offence is committed.
What it means:
There is concern that these proposals, if allowed to go ahead, could eventually lead car enthusiasts – who own several vehicles but do not use them all continuously- ending up having to pay insurance on all their vehicles. Affected groups would include vintage and classic owners, motorcycle collectors and under 17’s working on cars in readiness for taking to the road. This could even include vehicles under restoration or in store awaiting long term restoration.

Once again this is seen by many as yet another move by the Government to raise funds and also to add CIE (Continuous Insurance Enforcement) to the already very unpopular SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). All yet egain at the expense of the innocent motorist.

What goes 56 mph has no consideration for others and blocks the centre lane of Motorways for Miles?
They were once known as the knights of the road - courteous, professional and always without doubt the best of drivers. I am of course talking about our Long Distance Lorry Drivers who have it would appear over the past few years since the introduction of speed limiters changed their whole outlook to other motorists and their profession.

As I travel regularly over all the major Motorways of Britain I get more and more frustrated by the lorry drivers of today who spend mile upon mile blocking two lanes of the motorway trying their very best to out run the other and holding up traffic for other users. I do not for the world understand the mentality where you have two or more vehicles all restricted to about the same speed trying their level best to get past the other.

Why when I travel in Europe on their motorways, which are often only two lanes do I find lorry drivers happy to stay on the inside lane in convoy. No hold-ups everyone happy. Surely in this is a more responsible way to behave.     S. R.          Nottingham

Message from our Chairman/Founder
Dear Member
As many of you will be aware 2008 has continued to be difficult with my health problems. Although I hope now with the better weather that the recent improvements will continue. Thanks to all those members who have made contact with get well wishes and to those who have tried to contact me and been unable to do so. My apologies. Hopefully we are now back on track and I can get down to business as usual.
HELP REQUIRED:
I like many in this club had no idea just how much work Christina, our late Membership Secretary did on behalf of this Club and it’s Members. I for one am still coming to terms with this great loss and trying to cover all the things she did as a matter of course.
A numbers of members have already come forward and offered their help and have taken over various tasks within the Club to lighten my load but I am still looking for volunteers for some important areas in particular:-
Magazine/Newsletter Editor:
Members will be aware that we have encountered some problems in the past producing the Club Magazine. In order to cover this I have been producing the regular Newsletter and the updating of our Award Winning Website.
So that we can get back on track I am looking for someone to take on the post of Magazine Editor. This post requires the preparation of the Magazine as Computer Files from the Hard Copy, provided by myself, to the format required by the Printer e.g. A5 pages including photographs etc as a single file. If there is anyone out there who would like to volunteer, has the time to spare and is able to undertake this work please contact me asap in writing so that we can move forward.
I am also looking for the following:-
Events Co-ordinator:
Press Officer:
Various Regional Reps:
Advertising Co-Ordinator:
Various Technical Reps

If any member can help to fill any of the above please contact me asap in writing.

International Gathering Sunday 6th July 2008:
Preparations for our main event of the year are well in hand. My thanks to all those members who have already offered their help with the day. If anyone would like to help please let me know. Further details of the event are detailed elsewhere in this Newsletter plus members should receive Invitations etc with this mailing. This years event will also celebrate 50 Years of Volvo in Great Britain. The first Volvo cars, B16 120’s being imported by Charles Singer of Lex Brooklands (later to become Volvo Concessionaires) in 1958.
Well I think that is about it from me. Once again thanks to all those members who have been so kind to make contact during my continued health problems and to all of you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you all at our International Gathering or other events later in the year.

Best Wishes and Happy Volvoing

Volvo Enthusiasts Club Spring rally – 6th April 2008

The Volvo Enthusiasts Club Spring  Rally was this year held at The American Museum in Bath. Despite the extreme weather many Members braved the snow to attend the first Club Gathering of 2008. Members on arrival were greeted with refreshments in the Tea-Room and followed by a Free Entrance and Guided Tour of the Museum with the Museum Houses a collection of how Americans lived from the time of the early European Settlers to the American Civil War, a collection of wonderful quilts, Native American objects and folk lore and rooms including a replica C18 Tavern with home-cooked gingerbread. There is also a superb garden and of course the house – Claverton Manor. We were particularly fortunate that while we were visiting there was a Special Exhibition on the TITANIC, including items from the ship and how it’s sinking effected the USA.

Newsletter - January 2008

Message from our Chairman/Founder:

Dear Member
With Christmas now just a memory, It is time once again to look forward to a new year but also to reflect on our club activities last year.

2007 was without doubt our most difficult year since I started the club in 1989 which all started with the sudden death in January of our Membership Secretary and stalwart of the club Christina.

I for one had no idea of just how much work and effort she put into our club and it has over the last months been difficult at times to cover all the activities she did and also those which I normally undertake, due to my health. My thanks to all those members who have given and offered their support over those difficult months and those who have taken on some of the workload for 2008.

The club had a number of successes at various car shows in 2007 which included a 3rd Place Runner-up for our club stand at the Bristol Restoration Show and at the Classic & Sports Car Club Awards, presented at the Classic Motor Show at the NEC were we were awarded 'Best Club Website for club with under 4000 members'. Not bad considering that only 12 months ago we had no website. this was only achieved through the hard work of Trevor Ashley of HTP Solutions who gave us the site and now looks after the site on our behalf, thanks Trevor. We also at the same awards were awarded 'Runner-up Best Club Event' for our '2007 Volvo Reliability Challenge'.

A number of members had their Volvos photographed for various Classic Car Magazines and also TV last year. These included John Kemp's Volvo 131, which featured in two classic magazines ang Geoff and Gill Naylor's recently restored 1800S which was used in a TV program.. Phil Wells also had his 262 filmed for TV. I was also featured in the January 2008 edition of Classic and Sports Car. If you would like to have your car considered for use on one of our club stands at an event or be photographed for a magazine etc. please let me know, as we are at present in the process of producing a database of vehicles which are available. Please let me have recent photographs of the vehicles if you are interested.

Volvo's 80th birthday was celebrated in fine style with an event at the Heritage Motor Museum, Gaydon, organised by Volvo Car UK, where the club put on a fine display of Volvo models covered by the club. At this year's Classic Motor Show we also followed the 80th birthday theme with a stand of exhibits which included a 1938 PV52, 1953 PV831 ex Swedish Royal Family Limousine, 1967 131, 1970 1800E, 1978 240, 1990 760 Limousine, 1994 480GT and a 1994 850TS. We also on a trade stand, 'SPL' due to our space restrictions, the bodyshell of the original TV Saint Car, 71 DXC which is currently undergoing restoration. Volvo Heritage from Sweden also had a very large display at the show which featured a collection of convertible Volvos spanning 80 years. My thanks to those members who helped in any way at these our any of our events in 2007.

So here's to 2008. this is a very important year for British Volvo Owner/Enthustasts, it is the 50th birthday of Volvo in Great Britain. The first cars being shown by Volvo AB at the 1957 Motor Show at London Earls Court and the first official imports by Charles Singer of Lex Brooklands, which later would become Volvo Concessionares of 120's arriving in 1958. I very much hope that this year's activities to celebrate this will be one of our best yet.

The Winter Edition etc. of the club magazine will be with members as soon as I am able but in the meantime the Membership Renewal Form for 2008 is downloadable on the membership renewal page.

. Please note that there has been no increase in fees and once again there will as in previous years be a Free Gift for the first 200 membership renewals received.

One again may I take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support through what has proved a difficult time for the club and look forward to seeing you at our events in 2008.

Wishing you a Happy and Safe and Volvoing New Year

Kevin Price

Club Members Christmas Get Together - Museum of Road Transport, Coventry

This event had been booked by Christina following her visit in September 2006 and was our second specific Members Christmas Get Together at a venue with the club providing a light lunch for members plus entrance to the venue.

This year we visited the Museum of Road Transport in Coventry's City Centre. this proved to be an excellent choice of venue with both the museum for those interested in all forms of road transport and outside in Millennium Square for those who wished something different.

On arrival members were given complimentary tea of coffee and a piece of cake in the museum's tea room. this was followed by members looking around the museum's various exhibits, no Volvos but at least there was a DeLorean which used the Voplvo supplied V6 Euro Engine as fitted to the Volvo 260 and 760 models. Members then met for a buffet lunch provided by the club and a time to chat with fellow members. Awards for the best cars attending and furthest distance travelled were also presented. Results as follows

Best Car: Peter Titley - Volvo 122S
R/U Best Car Pre 1970: Karl Eric Malberg - Volvo 1800S
R/U Best Car Pre 1990: Robert Hughes - Volvo 740
R/U Best Car Post 1990: Colin Hughes - Volvo 760 Limousine
Furthest Distance Travelled: Colin Hughes - 1:12 Scale Model Volvo OV4

During our informal lunch member Colin Hughes, a keen Volvo collector of unusual Volvos brough along his lastest aquisition a Volvo OV4 whish had been restored by his good friend Geoff Hills (who is a Triumph 2000 fan - well we're not all perfect). The car Colin informed us was one a one-off 1:12 Scale Model of a 1927 Volvo OV4 built by a Pine Furniture Designer from Bristol who had made the vehicle at the request of one of his customers from just a photograph some 20 years ago. Sadly both the builder and the recipient passed away many years ago and the car had spent many years in a loft so his daughter informed Colin.

The OV4 had been advertised for sale on Ebay and Colin was amazed that there was only one other bidder, possibly because the vehicle had been listed under wooden toys with only the briefest reference to Volvo or no one would recognised it.

Restoration by Geoff was required due to the condition it arrived courtesy of Royal Mail who had managed to break the offside front wing and twist the chassis so the doors were out of line and the propshaft broken. Geoff also fitted a front windscreen - Photo's of the car appear on the website. As this was only 1:12 the size of other attending cars it was felt that it should receive the furthest distance travelled award, although unfortunately not under its own power! Thanks Colin for bringing it along. Perhaps you could bring it also to the International Gathering, I am sure other members would love to see it.

Following lunch and the presentation of awards, members were then taken on a guided tour behind the scenes of the museum which included the workshops and the archives which are in the process of being moved within the building to a new location. Our guide showed us a number of interesting vehicles on display which included an Aston Martin which was produced for the Motor Show. On looking under the bonnet all appeared normal, alternator, radiator, fan, manifolds etc. Then our guide asked which oil could be added to the engine? When removing the filler it showed that the whole engine was made from WOOD! The car was in fact just a design mock-up.

Thanks to all those members and their families who came along to what proved to be a great day out. Also to the staff of the museum who made us welcome

See you all at next year's Members Christmas Get-Together.

Links with other Volvo Clubs:
As part of our ongoing expansion of the site we have started to form links with other Volvo Club websites around the world. Our first link is with the Volvo 1800 Club of Sweden and already we have started to add our register of surviving 1800's onto their lists. Members wishing to view the site should follow the link.

Members Journeys:
This again is a new area on the site started by Trevor who would like to encourage all members to add an account of their favourite journeys in a Volvo to the site. Either email them direct to Trevor at info@volvoenthusiastsclub.co.uk or send hard copy with photographs if possible to Kevin at the usual club address.

Members Cars:
This is an area on the site where members can detail the history of their Volvo. This may include its purchase, restoration, shows exhibited, places visited etc. Already new members have contributed to this area with their new Volvos.

Wanted: Items for website, magazine and also Volvo Special Tools
the club is always looking for items to add to or for inclusion on the website and or in future magazines. If you have any items please send or email them to the club. We are also still looking for any Volvo special tools to add to those listed on the site and available to club members.

Bristol Restoration Show - 3rd-4th November 2007

The Club Stand at this years Bristol Restoration Show displayed the bodyshell of the original 'Saint P1800 71 DXC', which is at present undergoing total restoration. Also on the stand was a Volvo 480ES. Phil Edwards of Edwards Auto Services (see details) and his partner stepped in at very short notice to help build and man the stand, following Colin Tatlow a long supporter of the show, having to pull out due to being in hospital.

Phil Edwards demonstrated the art of Panel Beating a dent out of the side of the 480 which the visiting public found very interesting. A limited number of Photo's of the stand have already been placed on our site and can viewed on our website.

Our Stand was very well received by all and I am pleased to inform Members that we were awarded 3rd place for our display.
